Why You Should Get To Know Your Neighbors

The world today is fast-paced, with so much going on and constantly evolving. Because of this, people can live in a neighborhood for years without knowing anything about their surrounding community. However, there are great benefits of getting to know the people who live next door!

    Safety First

One of the main reasons why you should know your neighbors involves safety. Being connected to your neighbors means they are more likely to know your number, and alert you in case of a burglary attempt on your home or a potential theft of your car. In such cases, good neighbors will alert you and the police.

    Murphy’s Law

Something bad always seems to happen in the midst of a stream of fortunate events. Knowing your neighbors means you have someone to consult or share with when something bad happens. You can reach out to your neighbors for help when you have a flat tire or when you need to jumpstart your car.

Neighbors are often more than willing to help when you need a cup of sugar, aluminum foil or a roll of paper towels. Seeking help from your neighbors could be more convenient than driving to the nearest store to buy flour in the middle of baking a batch of cookies. Remember, most relationships thrive when there is a bit of give and take. Therefore, share those cookies!

    Pet Sitting

It may not be easy to travel with your pets whenever you need to go on a business trip or vacation. Knowing your neighbors in advance allows you to have a pool of reliable people who may be willing to pet sit for you whenever you have to go out of town.

Hiring a baby sitter is not something everyone can afford. While some people have relatives to call when they need childcare, unforeseen events can leave you without someone to watch your child. A neighbor may be willing to help in such circumstances. However, be careful when asking for help from your neighbors; if your neighbors feel you are taking advantage of their willingness to help, they will be less willing to help in future.

If you live in a neighborhood, don’t hesitate to reach out to the community around you. You never know who will be able to lend a helping hand, or what great friends you might make next!
